Fat Quarter Fabrics
Quilters know what fat quarters are. Four equal sections cut from a usually 44-inch wide yard of fabric. A 9-inch length (one-fourth of 36-inches) of fabric cut from a fabric 44-inches wide would produce a rectangular piece 9-inches by 44-inches whereas the fat quarter is cut as 18-inches by 22-inches. Each fabric section is still one-fourth or one-quarter yard in size but more blockish than a rectangular crosswise cut hence the name - fat quarter. The resultant piece of fabric is useful for quilters, scrap crafters, all crafters and sewers alike.
Fat quarters are often sold in coordinating fabric palette colors in bundles sometimes referred to as sets or packets or collections. Fabric types are usually cottons or cotton-blends and a mixture of harmonizing prints and solid colors. These bundled fabric quarters are often known by whimsical names like jelly rolls, charm packs, or layer cakes based on how the cuts are folded, rolled or stacked then tied as a unit for sale.
If you are looking to manage a slightly out of hand and growing fabric stash of small fabric pieces it can be helpful to cut fabric leftovers into the fat quarter size and bundle several individually folded and coordinating as to prints, solids and a combination.
